Most content editing systems today, Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal and others are a framwork for 3rd party plugins. The core system has very little functionality to itself, but relies on these 3rd party plugins to make it more useful. These plugins are often created by volunteers and submitted to the project without compensation.

In some ways this is a good thing, but in some ways, the important ways it can be a bad thing.

It is a good thing that these companies contribute to the community, but what happens when they stop? Who supports their development after they choose another direction?  Who determines that these plugins will be secure, and who is responsible if they aren't? These are questions that you must ask yourself or your developer BEFORE you get caught with a website that is being used as a mule by hackers.
